Thomas Douglas Gsell passed away peacefully at his home on April 24, 2026. He was born on February 25, 1950, in Chestertown to the late Clifford and Ruth Harrington Gsell. Tommy lived a life marked by dedication, simplicity, and a deep love for those around him.

Tommy was a 1969 graduate of Chestertown High School. Following his graduation on December 6, 1969, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Gsell. Their marriage lasted 46 wonderful years until Betty’s passing in July of 2015. Shortly after he was married, he was drafted into the Army, where he served proudly overseas in Germany. During his military service, Tommy primarily worked on road construction, contributing to important infrastructure projects during his time abroad.

After his honorable service and discharge, Tommy returned home and embarked on a new chapter in life where he was the owner and operator of Gsell Custom Excavation and Hauling, a business that reflected his work ethic and passion. Known as a very simple man who genuinely enjoyed his work, Tommy took pride in what he built and the service he provided to his community.

Outside of work, Tommy had a love for cars and found true joy in hunting, especially deer hunting. These interests spoke to his connection with nature and hands-on approach to life.

Tommy’s family was central to his heart. He is survived by his son Todd Gsell and his wife Tanya of Townsend, Delaware, and his daughter Tammy Gsell-Cannon and her husband Richard of Church Hill, Maryland; a granddaughter Breleigh Cannon who brought him so much happiness. Tommy is also survived by his siblings Joseph Gsell (Portia) of Chestertown, Maryland, William Gsell (Linda) of Salisbury, Maryland, and Patricia Unruh of Chestertown, Maryland.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth “Betty” Gsell, brother James Gsell and his wife Charity, and a brother in law Tommy Unruh.

Tommy’s life was one of quiet strength and steady dedication. He touched many lives through his work, his service, and his love for his family. He will be remembered for his simple and genuine nature, steadfast commitment, and the warm presence he brought to everyone who knew him.

Family, friends, and community are invited to honor Tommy’s memory at a visitation on May 2, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD, where a funeral service will begin at 12:00 PM
