Robert William Fox
Chestertown – Robert Fox passed away in the early morning hours of September 27, 2026.
Bob moved to Chestertown, MD in 1994 with his wife Vida Morley (Dumdey). Bob loved being part of the local community and adored his home on the Chester River, where he enjoyed woodworking, taking his kayak out for crabbing, making homemade pizza and somewhat questionable sushi as well as hosting parties and family visits. He and Vida’s home and their lovely backyard have been the location of numerous weddings, including their own, Vida’s daughter Kara and her husband Zac and the recent engagement of Bob’s son Aubrey and his wife Jennifer. Bob and Vida also enjoyed many trips to Mexico, Argentina, France, Germany and Hungary.
Bob was a sociologist and demographer whose work focused on important questions of population growth, migration, urbanization and employment and economic development, particularly throughout Latin America. In
1975, he authored Trends in Urban Population Growth in Latin America for the Inter-American Development Bank, where he worked for many years. In 1983, he co-wrote an article for the Christian Science Monitor called “The Population Explosion is Not Fizzling,” which Congressman James Scheur entered into the Congressional Record. His article “The World’s Urban Explosion” graced the cover of National Geographic in August 1984.
Bob was born in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1938. From his parents, he inherited a lifelong love of canning tomatoes and fruits, which he distributed to grateful family members and friends, along with his marvelous Shaker-style furniture.
Bob is survived by his wife Vida Morley (Dumdey), sister Pat Lauer (Fox) and sister-in-law Christine Fox (Stephenson), his children Christopher Fox and Aubrey Fox and stepchildren Tres Morley and Kara Posner (Morley), daughters-in-law Michelle Fox (Naddy), Jennifer Fox (Ensley-Lowe) and Windley Morley (Baker) and son- in-law Zac Posner, as well as his grandchildren Josh Fox, Taylor Fox, Luna Fox, Hazel Fox, Caroline Morley, Isabel Morley, Amelia Posner, Lucas Ensley-Lowe and Jameson Ensley-Lowe.
A service for Bob will be held at the Unitarian Universalists of Chester River on Friday, November 27 from 3 to 4 pm. The address of the service is 914 Gateway Drive, Chestertown, MD 21620.
