Patsy Haynes Alverson of Chestertown, Maryland, died peacefully on October 20th surrounded by the love of her many friends and family members.
Born in Brandenburg, Kentucky, Patsy always loved her old Kentucky home as much as she did her beautiful communities of Long Beach Island, the south of France, and the Eastern Shore. She was a proud alum of Georgetown College who devoted her professional life to teaching English at Southern Regional Middle School in Manahawkin, NJ. Her love of reading brightened her days, enriched her lively conversations, and led her to volunteer at the Kent County Library. Patsy had a joie d'vivre that filled every room she entered. She was a genuine listener who cared deeply for her large circles of friends and family members. Patsy was also a regular volunteer for other great causes throughout Chestertown, including the Humane Society, the hospital, and the Nearly New Shop. Her many loves included games with the girls at the club; cats; needlework; playing handbells at church; wine, chocolate, and a good hamburger; fine clothes; and all things Parisienne. She never missed a mint julep on Derby Day.
Patsy’s loving heart touched all generations with genuine interest and care. She took great joy from greeting strangers, making daily calls to check in on others, and frequent written correspondence. While that was true throughout her life, it was especially so during her years with her husband, Harry, when they traveled the canals of France on their houseboat and over the course of many years on the waterways of the Chesapeake.
Patsy was predeceased by her parents, Frances and Lamar Haynes; her loving husband, Harry Lynnwood Alverson, Jr.; her nephew Jason Pirtle; and her stepdaughter Christi Harless. She is survived by her loving sister, Sandra Haynes Whelan; her niece Jenna Combs (Charles); her nephew Jon Pirtle, Jr.; her stepchildren Harry L. Alverson III (Katherine), Tracy Alverson, and Kay Alverson as well as many sweet “grands” and “greats”.
Interment will be private in Kentucky. Friends and family everywhere will surely all raise a glass of champagne and recall special times with Patsy. Nothing would bring her more joy.
Donations in Patsy’s memory can be made to Compass Hospice in Centreville, MD or the Kent County Library in Chestertown, MD.
