Mary E. Story Joiner, 87 of Kennedyville, MD passed away on July 10, 2023, at home.

Mrs. Joiner was born on December 23, 1935, daughter of the late L. Sudler and M. Lola Jones Story. She was raised in Sudlersville where she was a graduate of Sudlersville High School Class of 1953. In 1955 she married Walter Joiner and later joined by two sons. Mary worked at the Chestertown Police Department starting in 1965 and from 1967 thru 1979 she worked as a barracks clerk and office manager for the Maryland State Police in Centreville. In 1989 they moved to their home in Kennedyville, which they built.

Mary belonged to the Frank M Jarman American Legion Auxiliary Post 36 for many years, serving as the Chaplain for 5 years from 2000-2005 and Unit Secretary for 2 years. She also served as the Northeast Shore District Chaplain, Secretary, and President. She was a life member of the American Legion and earned the National Americanism Promotion award in 2000. She was lovingly known as the 'Flag Lady' and was awarded the Patriotic Service Award by the Knights of Columbus in 2004. Mary loved to cook, quilt, watch NASCAR, and caring for her grandchildren and was known as Momma to many.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Story.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Walter L. Joiner, sons, William (Tatiana) of Kyiv, Ukraine and Robert (Robin) of Chestertown; 2 grandsons, Sam Joiner (Jamie) and Michael Joiner (Christine); 4 great grandchildren, Brady, Odin, Rowan Skye and Macy Grace Joiner and 2 brothers, L. Sudler Story, Jr. (Mary) of Barclay and Harold Wayne Story (Ruth) of Harrington,DE.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday July 19th at 11 am in St. Paul's Cemetery, Sandy Bottom Rd. Chestertown, MD.
