Martha "Marty" Jane Yost Wiltbank, 93, of Chestertown, MD died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on June 12, 2021.

Marty was born on May 17, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio, daughter of the late Warden and Grace Scott Yost.  When she was only 4 years old, her mother died. After that, she was cared for by her father, her brother, her sister, and her neighbors.  In 1942, she gained a devoted step-mother, Selma Hanson Yost.  She was raised in Ohio and moved to Chestertown in 1944.  She graduated from Chestertown High School in 1946.  After graduation she worked at C&P Telephone as a telephone operator.  In 1947, she married William C. "Billy" Wiltbank and in 1951 she and her husband moved to the family farm on Goose Hill in Chestertown.

Along with her parents and step-mother, Marty was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, her brother, Albert S. Yost; her sister, Patricia Chaney; her daughter-in-law, Linda Wiltbank; and her grandson, William Tyler Wiltbank.

Marty is survived by her children Teresa Bostic (Dudley) of Chestertown, Toni Witzemann (Bill) of Belington, WV, Timothy Wiltbank of South Mountain, PA, William Ted Wiltbank  (Pamela Peters) of Belington, WV, and Thomas Wiltbank (Tammy) of Chestertown, MD.

She is also survived by 6 of her 7 grandchildren, Raymond Gill, Sr., Silas Witzemann, Abigail Schauble, Amanda Milash, Brian Wiltbank, and Jessica Young.  In addition, Martha is survived by 6 great-grandchildren, Raymond Gill, Jr., Ian Wiltbank, William and Benjamin Schauble, Olivia and Bethany Milash.  Her beloved nephews, Bill Chaney and David Yost and her niece Kitty Yost and their families also survive her.

Marty's busiest years were in the 1950's and 1960's when she raised her 5 children and ran the household.  During those years, she ran a busy household and cooked three meals a day, not only for her immediate family, but for additional men working on the farm, and for friends. Even though she grew up in the city, she thrived as a farmer's wife.  She did work on the farm including vegetable gardening, raising chickens and ducks, scrubbing milk cans from time to time, and butchering, to name a few.  She did a superhuman job of supporting her children in all of their activities and endeavors.  She was a loving caregiver for her parents in later years.  She and Billy opened their home to family and friends for extended stays. They hosted memorable Easter Egg hunts for the children in the family for many, many years.

Marty was a long-time member of the Frank M. Jarman Legion Auxiliary and the Christ United Methodist Church. She enjoyed attending church when she was physically able to.  After she retired, Marty was a member of the local AARP group, the Betterton Golden Age Club, the Red Hat Society and for over 10 years, Marty volunteered at the Nearly New Shop.   She was active as a member of art classes and writing classes. For many years, she played cards each week for many hours with a group of treasured friends. She read at least one book a week as well as her Smithsonian and Archeology magazines.  All of her adult life, she crocheted afghans for family and friends.

Marty loved to travel. She and her husband, Billy, traveled many places in the U.S., often to visit family and many times with friends. She also traveled on her own with friends, especially to antique hunt.  After she retired, Marty often traveled all over the United States and Europe with her family and friends.  She made friends internationally.

After her children were grown, Marty continued her education in the Queen Annes County High School LPN Program, at Chesapeake College and at Wesley College in Dover, DE, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1983 at the age of 55.  She worked as a registered nurse at the Kent and Queen Annes Hospital and at Magnolia Hall until she retired in 1996 when she was 68.

Until the end of her life she kept in close communication with her family members and her friends. She had many phone conversations every day until her last illness. She looked forward to people visiting and enjoyed sending and receiving cards and presents on birthdays, special occasions and holidays.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 17 from 10 – 12 in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, Galena, where funeral service will begin at 12 pm.  Burial will be in Chestertown Cemetery.
