Marion Lee Moore passed away peacefully with family at her side on June 30, 2024. She was 91.

Born Marion Lee Waterman, she was the youngest daughter of Richard H. and Elizabeth Bandel Waterman of Catonsville, Md. Marion attended Catonsville High School where she was a stand, out athlete, earning twelve varsity letters in field hockey, basketball and softball. She was named Outstanding Athlete in her high school graduating class.

Marion followed the footsteps of her two older sisters and attended Washington College in 1951. There were no intercollegiate sports for women at that time and she was instrumental in beginning campus intramurals for women. It was at Washington College that she met her future husband, Robert A. "Bob" Moore. They were married in 1956 and lived wherever they could find affordable housing so that Bob could finish his college degree, including veteran housing in Westminster. She loved to tell the story of turning a corner while very pregnant and literally bumping into the then Baltimore Colts player Big Daddy Lipscomb on the campus of Western Maryland College. While living in a trailer in Chestertown, Marion took a position for one year as the physical education teacher at Centreville High School.

Marion and Bob raised three children, Chrissy, Michael and Timmy. They purchased their first home in Kennedyville where they immediately established their business Dukes-Moore Insurance Agency. Marion became a licensed agent and ran the office while Bob focused on sales and customer relations. Together they grew a successful business as they immersed themselves in community activities including the Kennedyville Volunteer Fire Co., 4-H Blue Banner Club, Kennedyville Homemakers Club and Shrewsbury Parish Church. Marion was one of the first three women trained to drive a fire truck in the event there were no other men to do so.

Marion supported Bob as head coach for several Little League Baseball and Football teams, serving as the scorer and head field groomer for baseball. She transported many athletes to games in their gas guzzling Chevy Impala station wagon. She and Bob took up boating, eventually owning a 33' Trojan cabin cruiser that took the family by sea to St. Michael's, Oxford and the Baltimore harbor for family vacations.

They packed up and moved from Kennedyville to Cacaway Farm on Langford Bay on the Chester River in 1988. Together they welcomed their children and their families to enjoy the bounties of the river. Marion made sure there was an abundance of homemade potato salad, corn on the cob and iced tea to go with the bushels of crabs that the kids hauled in. She was an excellent crab dipper on a trot line and knew how to cull crabs without a nipped finger.

Marion followed each of her eight grandchildren in whatever activities they pursued. She and Bob enjoyed a brief retirement together before he passed away in 2011. The end of her remarkable life was devastated by dementia, robbing her of her many skills and talents that she had used to great advantage, for herself and for her family, whom she loved without condition.

Marion was predeceased by her husband Bob, and her two sisters, Ann Macielag and Sue Lennon. She is survived by her children Chrissy and son-in-law Ned Aull and their children Jeb and Libby, Michael and daughter in law Wendy and their children Megan and Kait and Timmy and Carol and their four children, Madeline, Taylor, Dylan and Hannah. She has three great grandchildren with two on the way.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 11 am at St. Paul's Kent, Chestertown, MD.  A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Burial will be held privately in St. Paul's Cemetery.  In her honor and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests, if you wish, a gift in her memory to the Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne's County, 116B S. Lynchburg St., Chestertown, MD 21620. She would be pleased, given her long history of advocating for the underdog and underserved and her love of recreational sports for kids.
