Margaret Turner Schelts, 'Betty' 96 of Church Hill, MD passed away on August 9, 2023 surrounded by her loving family at Compass Regional Hospice, Centreville, MD.
Mrs. Schelts was born on September 14, 1926 in Glen Burnie, MD, daughter of the late L. Dewey Turner and Madeline Chance Turner. Betty was raised in Claymont, DE but spent many years with family in Galena where she was a 1944 graduate of Galena High School. The same year she married Charles Schelts and in 1948 moved to Church Hill where Charles began working for Church Hill Lumber Company. In 1972 they purchased the Church Hill Lumber Company and Store which they owned and operated until 2005.
Betty was a member of the QA County Historical Society, Church Hill United Methodist Church, where she held numerous positions and was a member of the choir, the Centreville Chapter #69 Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of QA County Quilting Guild. She had worked as an aide at Centreville Middle School and the Kent County Library. Betty and Mrs Peg Jones Embert co founded the Upper County kindergarten in September of 1959, held in the basement of the Church Hill Theatre. Betty loved to sew, quilt, cook and garden.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Charles A. Schelts and brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Margaret Turner.
Betty is survived by her children, Carol Bennett of Church Hill, Sandi Sheahen (Ed) of Chestertown, Deborah 'Debbie' Bitter (Henry) of Centreville and Lawrence C. 'Larry' Schelts (Toni) of Church Hill; 6 grandchildren, Judy Solverson, Amy McCauley (Mike), Morgan Baker (Aubrey Barto), David Baker (Rebecca), Lauren Abbott (Eric) and Erica Wendler (Bob); 13 great grandchildren, Crystle, Jason, Ashley, Corin, Logan, Bobby, Anton, Evan, Finn, Piper, Beau, Claire and Owen; 4 great great grandchildren, two nieces who survive her Kathy T Green ( Chris) and Lori T Tippitt ( Mike); a great niece and 2 great nephews.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 15 from 5 to 7 pm in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, Galena, MD. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 16 at 11 am in Church Hill United Methodist Church, Church Hill, MD where friends may call 1 hour prior to service. Burial will follow in Church Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to Compass Regional Hospice, 160 Coursevall Dr. Centreville, MD 21617 or a charity of your choice.
