Until Fiddler's Green

It is my greatest honor and saddest moment to announce that I have known and loved John Mecca.  He passed away in the morning of September 10, 2023 in our home that he helped create.  With all his heart I know  that he adored me, our children (Mary, Jack and Drew) and his friends and family.  From the start, John knew how to live and connect with the world around him; he had a profound and inspired impact on everyone and everything he knew.  From an early age he sailed, skied, biked, played numerous sports, and had many hobbies.  He carried his passions into his adult life: teaching and mentoring others to expand their horizons as he expanded his own.  Upon his graduation from Rutgers (RU Rah-Rah!), he was commissioned a 2LT  in the Army and served as a Cavalry officer all over the world and in several combat zones-- earning a Bronze Star and numerous other medals.  From the East-West German border to the Gulf War, Somalia, Haiti and our southern border, John created a team that was greater than the sum of its parts.  After John hung up his spurs and the abundance of Bavarian cuckoo clocks, he began his career in banking (MBNA and Bank of America) and his light continued to shine brightly.  He recently was honored with the Bank of America Pinnacle Award--reserved for the top 1% of financial center leaders.  John's zest for life never diminished, and over the last two and a half years he imbued joy unto many amazing experiences and events--two graduations, a naval commissioning, a beautiful wedding, numerous football games (Go Irish and Go Giants!!), a flock of ducks, and several awe inspiring trips (NYC, Atlanta, DC, "the Tour" and Northern Lights).  John also spent over a 100 hours on the water each year--racing, teaching or just basking.  But truth be told, his greatest loves were his family.  He was so proud that his children had matured into loving adults who have launched into passionate careers and lives of their own.  At the end of the day, John inspires us all to be a little bit better, embrace both "the suck" and the hope, and choose joy!!

There will be a visitation followed by a service at the Galena Funeral Home, 118 W Cross St. Galena MD 21635 (www.galenafuneralhomeofsls.com) on Friday, 29 September from 3-5pm. The service begins at 5pm.

Since John spent every Friday over the last 3.5 years in an Hawaiian shirt, we will honor his memory in a similar manner--come celebrate the life of a phenomenal person and wear your happiest of attire  !!

John's remains will ultimately be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.  The date and time is yet to be determined.
