Joan Thompson Plummer, 80, of Chestertown, Maryland, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024. Born on June 25, 1944, in Chestertown to John W. and Katharine Shriley Thompson, Joan lived a life full of dedication, love, and service to her family and community.
Joan began her career as a hairdresser, working in the field from 1963 to 1968. In 1968, she transitioned to a role with Baltimore County Schools, where she served until 1982. Following her return to Kent County, Joan worked for the Kent County Humane Society and also enjoyed a role as a waitress in Worton. Her final and most cherished position was as a Direct Care Assistant for the A.F. Whitsitt Center, where she served until her retirement in 2006.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 36 years, Thomas W. Plummer, her parents John and Katharine Thompson, and her cherished older brother James W. Thompson. Joan found joy in spending time with her family, and her love of travel led her to visit 25 states across the country.
Joan is survived by her son, John Plummer, and his wife Cheryl of Galena, MD; her daughter, Tammy Leader, and her husband Jeremiah of Chestertown, MD; four grandchildren, Kyle Plummer (Zoe), Cassandra Plummer, Cheyenne Leader, and Thomas Leader; her sister, Mary Spray of Millington; her brother, Bill Thompson of Worton; and her sister-in-law, Helen Thompson, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown. A reception will follow the service at the Galena Volunteer Fire Co. Hall, 90 E. Cross St. Galena, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Joan's memory.
