Obituary

Irene Swain Redding, 96 of Chesapeake City, formerly of Chestertown passed away peacefully on October 6, 2023

Mrs. Redding was born on June 15, 1927 in Landenberg, PA, daughter of the late Harry L and Anna Hendrickson Swain.  She attended school in Kemblesville, PA and later graduated from high school in Newark, DE.  At the age of 16 she taught piano lessons and continued throughout her life.  In 1947 she married John Redding, Jr. and they began their family. While living in Newark she joined Christiana Methodist Church and worked for the University of Delaware as a secretary for 16 years, retiring in 1985.  After John's retirement they moved to Chestertown where she became an active member of Chestertown Baptist Church.

Mrs. Redding was an avid quilter, enjoyed sewing, crafts, gardening, bird watching and decoy carving and loved playing the piano.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years John 'Jack' Redding, Jr., granddaughter, Tina Michelle Redding, great-grandson, Abram Joseph Hall and siblings, Florence Taylor, Joseph Swain, Lillian Mink and Ruth Underwood, daughter in law Debra Redding and son in law Alfred Hall.

Mrs. Redding is survived by her children, Kathryn Shetzler (James), John A. Redding, III (Kay), Nancy Hall and Carol Soldau; a brother Earl Swain; 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 14 from 6 to 8 pm at the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, Galena, MD.  Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, October 15 at 1pm in Trinity United Methodist Church, Chesapeake City, MD with viewing from 12 to 1pm.  Burial in Crumpton Cemetery, Crumpton, MD.
