Elizabeth Lee (Betsy) Hahn died on May 14, 2017 at Shore Medical Center in Chestertown after a brief illness. Betsy was born in Taipei, Taiwan on April 13, 1959, the daughter of US Navy Captain Thomas F. Hahn and Elizabeth C. Hahn. She grew up in Bethesda, MD where she graduated from Walter Johnson High School. She studied English Literature at Washington College in Chestertown and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1982 with a degree in Agricultural & Resource Economics.
She is survived by her wife and partner of 27 years, Lisa Sasser of Rock Hall, stepmother Nathalie Hahn, brother Chris Hahn, stepbrother Duane Torrey and niece Beverly Hahn.
An athlete and sports enthusiast, Betsy's early career focused on recreation, working in programs in Montgomery County, MD, Beaufort County, SC and Washington County, MD. After receiving a Master of Science degree from Hood College in Frederick, MD in 1995, she pursued a new direction working as an Environmental Biologist for the US Department of Fish & Wildlife Chesapeake Bay Field Office in Annapolis. She also worked as an Environmental Planner for the Nashua Regional Planning Commission in New Hampshire.
Betsy will be remembered by those who knew her as a caring and loyal friend with an irrepressible spirit and boundless energy. She was an avid gardener and landscaper and devoted to Bama the black Lab and three cats, Kona, Misia and Jack. Travel was perhaps her greatest passion, from touring England by canal boat with her parents during her high school years, traveling by train from Budapest to Stockholm or roaming the English countryside in a vintage VW camper, she was always ready for the next adventure. Although Betsy and Lisa moved to Rock Hall just a year ago she loved her new home and embraced life in her new community. She was a member of the Rock Hall Yacht Club and enthusiastic volunteer with the Garden Club.
Plans will be announced as a later date for a gathering of friends and family to celebrate Betsy's life.
