Obituary

Worton — Dorothy Schnoor Joiner, 98, of Worton, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home, surrounded by the love of her family.

Dorothy was born on May 7, 1928, to the late Otto M. (of Cambridge) and Dorothy L. (of New York) Schnoor.

On March 29, 1955, Dorothy married her longtime sweetheart, Charles H. Joiner Jr., and built a home on the Joiner farm, where their three children and one grandson were born and raised. Before she was a loving mother and hardworking farm wife, she worked as a telephone operator for ten years after graduating from Chestertown High School in 1946.

Dorothy was an accomplished piano player—both for pleasure, playing at home for her family, as well as at Worton United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member. Dorothy enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and helping plan fundraisers and church suppers. She was also the talented writer behind the Worton Digest, a column she wrote for the Kent County News for many years, as well as an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

To quote Dorothy, "Charles’s life was governed by the seasons, from the first sounds of February frogs in the meadow, the robins of spring and arrival of purple martins, picking from the tree the first fruit of the season along with the planting of crops, baling hay time with an eye to heat, rain and weather conditions, harvesting crops in autumn, the honking of wild geese, then checking machinery before storing for another year.” For 62 years, until Charles’s passing in 2017, this was her life as well. Dorothy’s greatest joy was her family and the home she and Charles had built on the farm.

However, it will not be her talents in the arts, her volunteer work, or the long, hard hours she put in beside her husband that most people will remember. It will be her infectious smile. The warm greeting any visitor who graced her doorstep received. It will be the hospitality and kindness she showed to friends and strangers alike. It will be the pride that shone on her face anytime she spoke of her family.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Byrd Joiner; sons, Charles Henry Joiner III and Robert William Joiner (Heather); grandchildren, Timothy (Marie), Christopher, Devyn (Jake), Drew, Alexandra, and Bradley; great-grandchildren, Kayla (David), Hailey (Kasey), John, and Emma; and great-great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Kohen.

A viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Worton United Methodist Church in Worton, where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Worton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Worton UMC, PO Box 114, Worton, MD 21678.
