Donald E. Othoson, 91 of Galena, MD passed away on August 9, 2026 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Othoson was born November 25, 1934 and raised in Sassafras and was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School. He received his Batchelor of Science from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and continued his education obtaining his Master’s Degree in Horticulture from the University of Delaware. While at the University of Delaware, Green Giant approached Don and he became their Commodity Profit Director of Asparagus. The position took him to Minnesota for 9 years until returning to the eastern shore. In the late 1970s Green Giant moved its operations to Washington State but Mr. Othoson remained local, becoming self-employed, taking over the operations for 10 years. He then operated a produce market in Smyrna for 7 years. Don later helped manage Willey Farms in Townsend where he was extremely proud of his tomato display. He retired at the age of 70.

Mr. Othoson served on the Galena Town Council for many years and for 3 ½ years was the Mayor of Galena. He resided in the oldest home in Galena and took great pride and interest in his yard.

Along with is parents, he was preceded in death by his son Scott Othoson in 2012.

Mr. Othoson is survived by his wife of 68 years Ruth Gillespie Othoson, son Eric Othoson, daughter Elizabeth Bankhead (William III) and grandson William ‘Will’ Bankhead IV.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 2 pm in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD
