Donald Lou Detweiler, 89, passed away at the Bird House Hospice on Monday, April 04, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Don was born on November 6, 1932 in Wellman, IA, the son of William Glen and Blanche Ethel (Norris) Detweiler. He married Frances Anderson on November 21, 1952 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He served for two years during the Korean War stationed in Japan and afterward spent most of his working career with Bell Telephone, retiring in his early fifties. After the death of his wife, he met his soul mate Janet C. Gerlock. Together they made a life in Florida and traveled extensively throughout the United States as well as attending many Blue Grass festivals. Don is survived by his two daughters, Vicki Betts (Mikel) of Iowa City, IA and Vera Ostrander (Rollie) of Solon, IA. He is also survived by three beloved grandchildren: Matt Lepic (Nicole), and Kari Juhl (Brandon), Jameson Betts and eight great-grandchildren: Kiersten, Keegan, Tyler, Tanner, Tiffany, Thomas, Landon, and Austin. Don was preceded in death by his loving partner Janet, parents, wife Frances, and brothers- Ronald and Gene.
The family wishes to express special thanks for the wonderful care given by the many members of Iowa City Hospice and the Bird House. Special consideration goes out to his close friends in Florida, the Lundquists, Butlers, and Walshes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Bird House – Hospice Home of Johnson County or to Iowa City Hospice. Celebration of life and burial will take place on July 14, 2022 at 11 am in Galena Cemetery, Galena, MD.
