David E. Pines, 73 of Galena, MD passed away on May 19, 2024, at home.

Mr. Pines was born on January 22, 1951, in Baltimore, MD, son of the late Joseph and Marcia Gann Pines.  After graduating from Gilman School, he furthered his education at Lake Forest College and received his master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins.  He began his career as a history teacher at Friends School of Baltimore. He expanded his teaching to transformational programs for youth, traveling to Los Angeles, Montana, Alaska as well as up and down the East Coast.  David had a deep affinity for Native American culture, admiring their ability to live in harmony with the land. This inspired his career to focus on improving sustainability and balancing technology with the natural world. For his transformational work with the Northern Cheyenne tribe, he was given an honorary name of "Tatanka Ska" meaning "White Buffalo", a sacred symbol by the tribal chief.

In 1981, Mr. Pines, along with a good friend, co-founded the Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center. Their focus was on experiential learning and team building, utilizing nature for youth to grow, learn, and develop. Additionally, for 20 years he served as a Management Consultant to top businesses, working with clients from all over the world. Through his travels, he also developed a deep affinity for scotch whisky.

David was a cycling enthusiast, logging up to ten thousand miles a year on his bicycle. He also had an appreciation for music - he played the guitar, harmonica and was a collector of fine instruments.

David's parents had a home on the Eastern Shore in Cape Saint Claire, and he always yearned to return to the Chesapeake Bay area. In 2020, he fulfilled this dream by moving to Galena along the Sassafras River.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Rachel Pines.

Mr. Pines is survived by his son Justin Pines (Rachael) of Philadelphia, PA, his partner Henni Hahn; a sister Ellen Pines of Baltimore, MD and 2 grandchildren, Amelia and Maxwell Pines, who called him G-Pa.
