Bruce Wayne Owens, 66, of Betterton, MD lost his life to cancer on May 10, 2023, just 3 weeks after his cancer diagnosis.

Born on May 19, 1956, Bruce was the first son of the late Donald Leroy and Jean Brobst Owens of Betterton, MD. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifton Owens and a nephew, Paul J. Owens. He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Owens of Chestertown and his granddaughter, who was the light of his life, Kaylee Owens. He is also survived by a sister, Donna Jean Owens of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, Paul Owens (Angela) of Lynbrook, NY, and Glenn Owens (Leslie) of Worton; 7 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews, all of whom loved their "Uncle Brucer" dearly.

Bruce attended Kent County High School and worked in home construction and remodeling all his life. When he wasn't working, volunteering, or helping someone, he enjoyed fishing and riding his motorcycle. He was always willing to help anyone who needed help, was loved by many, and will be missed by many. He gave of himself with no expectation of return. Bruce was known for his witty and sometimes bawdy sense of humor and jokes, his caring nature, and all who knew him could "sure tell some stories." He could always make you laugh.

Bruce joined the Betterton Volunteer Fire Co. in May, 1971 and served faithfully in various capacities over the years, including Driver, Firefighter, House and Hall Manager, and on the Board of Directors. He was instrumental in the LODD Memorial for the Fallen Firefighters. He was voted in by the membership as a Life Member and held an active administrative role until this past year when he passed the torch. Bruce was also a Life Member of the Kent & Queen Anne's Rescue Squad, joining in November, 2001. He volunteered and gave of his time unselfishly in this organization and became a Captain and driver.  Bruce served as Past Commander of the Betterton Sons of the American Legion Squadron 246 and Past Vice Commander of the North Eastern Shore District American Legion. He exemplified the meaning of Volunteerism and Community and enjoyed teaching the new and younger members the ropes.

A graveside service will be held Monday, May 15 at 1 pm in Still Pond Cemetery, Still Pond, MD. Officiated by Rev. Bill Carroll, arrangements by Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech. Refreshments will be served after the service at the Betterton Fire Hall.
